Quality Time
Watch for the forthcoming release in November of Quality Time by Bob Mintzer on TVT Records. This recording features a quartet of Bob, Peter Erskine, Phil Markowitz, Jay Anderson along with members of Yellowjackets. The music is a blend of straight-ahead jazz, funk,and gospel. This is Bob's first small band solo release in the U.S in 7 years. He's excited to be working with the TVT label, which is venturing into the jazz realm after having big success in the alternative rock genre (Nine Inch Nails, Underworld, The Connells).

Latin From Manhattan
New Bob Mintzer Release
During the last fifteen years, Bob Mintzer has arguably done more than any other artist in keeping the big band tradition fresh and exciting. Latin from Manhattan is his latest recording.

For Latin from Manhattan, Mintzer penned nine outstanding original compositions ranging from mambo and cha-cha to meringue and bolero. Also included on this sensational recording is a fabulous arrangement of Tito Puente's famous "Oye Como Va."

Additions to the band for this recording include percussionist Louis Bauzo delivering authentic Latin rhythms with the strong support of pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Jay Anderson, and drummer John Riley. In addition to an outstanding performance by Bob Mintzer, saxophonists Pete Yellin, Lawrence Feldman, Bob Malach, trombonists Larry Farrell, Keith O'Quinn, Sam Burtis, Dave Taylor, and trumpeters Bob Millikan, Larry Lunetta, Scott Wendholt and Mike Mossman add their special flavors to this most capable big band.

Bob's Big Band performed at IAJE, causing a near riot when more people showed up than were able to fit in the convention site room. He also played at the NAMM show and toured the southwest with D'Addario Super Band including Peter Erskine, John Pattitucci, and John Abercrombie.

Jimmy worked on a tribute to Lowell George, Rock and Roll Doctor on BMG. The track featured Phil Perry, Merry Clayton and Ricky Lawson. He also worked on a new CD from Marc Antione entitled Madrid for GRP. Jimmy also is featured on a new Everett Harp CD for Blue Note. You can hear Jimmy on a new duet recording with Will Downing and Gerald Albright on Verve.

Russ and Jimmy worked on a tribute to James Taylor playing on tracks with Brenda Russell and Robben Ford. Will has performed with Rachelle Ferrell, Everette Harp, Brandon Fields, and Kevin Toney.

Bob performed a concert with the Airforce Band of the West in San Antonio Texas for the Southwest Band Conference. He also played a concert in Milan, Italy with Gabrielle Caneglio and the Jazz Class Orchestra plus played concerts with John Pattitucci in Santo Domingo, and with Jean-Luc Fillon Trio in France. Bob played at the North Sea Jazz Festival with the Royal Conservatory Big Band of the Hague.

Will accompanied Bob Gatzen, the inventor of the DrumFrame, on a clinic/tour of the Mars Music Stores. Mars is a growing music store chain that will be adding 12 new stores to the 6 already opened stores in the U.S. Will & Bob did clinics at Ft. Lauderdale, Atlanta, Houston, and Nashville locations.

Jimmy worked on a new Gino Vannelli recording Slow Love on Verve and produced one of the tracks: "Cry Baby." You can also catch Jimmy on the new Glenn Jones CD It's Time for Atlantic. Jimmy can be found on the debut CD for The John Molo Project entitled Moderęko as well as on the debut CD for Warren Sneed entitled Brothers and on a new Tony Palacios CD entitled Epic Tales of Whoa! on Cadence. Jimmy also played for Vonda Shepard on the Ally McBeal Show.

Russ and Jimmy composed, performed and co-produced several cuts on Marilyn Scott's latest CD Avenues of Love. Russ arranged, composed and performed on Eric Marienthal's latest recording, Walk Tall. Russ also went to Hungary to perform and record with the Twin Lines Project, a group comprised of two Hungarian musicians, Pal Vasvari, and Gyula Csepregi. along with American musicians Dave Samuels, and Alex Acuna.

Will has been performing in the worship conferences of Promise Keepers. "In the two years I've been involved with PK, I've become more aware of what a blessing it is to know Jesus and that has encouraged me to grow more in his wisdom and share with those around me."

As part of a Yamaha keyboard promotion/educational Jim performed in a tribute to Jeff Porcaro with Joe Porcaro, Steve Porcaro, Mike Porcaro, David Garfield, David Paich, David Benoit, Tom Scott, Walt Fowler, Mike Miller, Larry Carlton, Nathan East, Will Lee, Lenny Castro, Alex Acuņa, Steve Gadd, John Peņa, Dave Weckl, Jason Scheff, Paulette Brown, David Pack and Elvin Jones. This was all highlighted by the music from the CD released on Zebra Records.

Jim also attended the Northern California Bass Club's educational seminar in February as a clinician and was commissioned to write a special piece of music for them. The piece, entitled "Wounded Knee" consisted of 5 arco bass players and a percussionist. He also taught theory and harmony classes at the Los Angeles Music Academy. Jim, Russ and Will conducted 2 clinics there as well.

William and Jim taught a clinic/master class at the Hilversum Conservatory Of Music during their trip to Holland to perform with the Metropole Orchestra. Jim will teach two bass clinics in Milan and Modena Italy on October 3rd and 4th: Sponsored by the Academia Musica Moderna. Jim continues to write an educational quarterly column on improvisation for Bassics Magazine, and is featured as the cover story in the summer, 1998 edition.
